Webcasts

I have overseen production of the webcasts at several ICS annual meetings, where the international urology, gynaecology, continence nurse and physiotherapist community gather to network and share their research.

This presentation was recorded at ICS 2019 in Gothenburg, Sweden. During the four day conference, 83 sessions were webcast featuring in excess of 400 presentations. This provides a huge amount of educational content to the international membership of the society.

Webcast setup

I designed this workflow for webcasting up to six simultaneous halls at the ICS annual conference in 2019.

Each hall has a laptop set up, compiling video of the speaker, their presentation slides and the microphone audio in Open Broadcaster Software.

The laptop records a full day of sessions which are edited in to segments after the conference.

This set up significantly improved quality of webcast and speed of production, plus reduced on-site tasks, compared to previous years' workflows of syncing video and audio files in post production.

Live streamed webcast

I have carried out live streams of several key state of the art presentations from the ICS annual conference, using the same OBS set up.

I ensured a suitable internet connection was provided in the lecture halls and carried out plenty of tests before going live to the international audience.

Studio production

I set up an in-house film studio at the ICS head quarters in Bristol, used for filming educational and promotional video.

  • Studio lighting and a neutrally painted back wall gives clean and sharp video of the presenter.
  • Sensitive condenser microphones are used to capture high quality audio.
  • The presenter can choose to read a script from a teleprompter placed in front of the camera lens.
  • The presenters slides are placed below the camera for them to view.

Studio filmed presentation

Here, epidemiologist Kari Tikkinen travelled from Helsinki to record this presentation on understanding statistics of risks to better inform patients.

Kari was able to relax and practice his presentation in the calm studio environment, while I took care of the recording.

Live webinar

During Covid confinement, I proposed the capturing and live streaming of Microsoft Teams video presentations and discussion by continence healthcare experts.

The ICS Live audience were able to ask questions to the presenters on the ICS website.

Here, presenters from London and Istanbul talked through their urology patient workflow during the pandemic and answered questions from around the world.

Conference highlights

I filmed interviews with key speakers and delegates of the ELUTS meeting in Prague in 2019; a European gathering of urologists offering training and presenting their latest research.

I enjoyed telling the positive story of the two organisations, ICS and EAU, collaborating to put on this event from the perspective of the experienced and the student urologist.

I over saw the compilation of the interviews with video I took of the conference taking place.

Surgical training course highlights

I filmed interviews with international delegates and faculty members plus video of the activity at this cadaveric training course in Bristol in 2018.

A big challenge here was to avoid any of the cadavers appearing in the shot while still showing the learning taking place in the lab.

The excitement of the delegates to learn was palpable and a pleasure to capture in film.

Surgical masterclass course highlights

In 2018 I travelled to Khartoum in Sudan to film this charitable surgical education course, where local patients were treated for vaginal fistula.

Vaginal fistula is a result of prolonged labour caused by these women being subject to female genital mutilation, a tradition in this part of the world, and living far from hospital care during labour. The treatment these patients received will cure their urinary incontinence thus transforming their lives and allowing them to be accepted back in to their communities.

It was a rewarding experience to have the opportunity to tell the story of this fantastic work and to see hospital staff and culture in another continent.

ICS 2018 Philadelphia promption

I filmed the this video during a planning meeting of the ICS scientifc committee in Philadelphia, US, to help promote the main ICS meeting of 2018.
